In today’s fast-paced world, characterised by quick fixes, fast media, and the rise of platforms like TikTok, our educational systems remain stubbornly rooted in the past. The curriculum has seen little change since the 1970s, leaving students to engage with the same texts and teaching methods their parents did decades ago. I personally find some the texts out of date and slightly misguided.

As the self-styled queen of edutainment, I have developed a series of interactive theatre shows that resonate with the TikTok generation, making learning both engaging and relevant.
The Power of Edutainment

Edutainment is a hybrid approach that combines education with entertainment, making learning more engaging and effective. This method leverages the natural appeal of entertainment to facilitate educational experiences. By doing so, it transforms traditional learning environments into dynamic spaces where students are not just passive recipients of information but active participants in their own learning journey.

Interactive theatre for today’s young people

To bridge the gap between outdated content and contemporary interests, I created a game show-style interactive theatre piece that tackles serious societal issues. This format allows the audience to shout out, fidget, and join in with the action, making the learning experience more immersive and memorable.

I am clear that we do not do role play and find myself irritated when people refer to my work as this. Role play for me is uncomfortable and manufactured, even as a former actor I hate role play. Our performances feature professional actors delivering natural dialogue. For example, we reference modern concerns like stalking using Snapchat, making the content highly relatable. We use language that reflects younger people.

Why Edutainment Works

1. Engagement

By integrating entertainment into learning, edutainment captures the attention of young people who are like fast-paced and visually stimulating content of social media. A greater sense of engagement can lead to better retention and understanding of the material.

2. Relevance- Edutainment can address contemporary issues using familiar mediums and contexts. This relevance makes the learning experience more meaningful and applicable to real life.

3. Participation

Interactive elements encourage active participation, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. When students are involved in the action, they are more likely to internalise and discuss the lessons being taught.

4. Learning through fun activities can reduce anxiety and resistance to education. When students enjoy the process, they are more motivated to participate and succeed.

Examples of Edutainment

1. Educational Video Game

combine gameplay with historical and scientific learning, making complex subjects accessible and engaging.

2. Television Shows

Programmes have long demonstrated the effectiveness of edutainment, presenting scientific concepts in a fun and approachable manner.

3. Interactive Theatre

Our own productions, where audience members can interact with actors and influence the storyline, address topics from coercive control to cyberbullying providing both entertainment and education.

Edutainment represents a powerful tool for modern education, especially in an era dominated by fast media and digital content. By making learning fun, relevant, and interactive, it addresses the shortcomings of traditional educational methods and aligns with the interests and habits of today’s youth. As educators and innovators, we have the opportunity to reshape learning experiences, ensuring they are not only informative but also enjoyable and impactful.

So how can edutainment be used in corporate learning?

Edutainment can be effectively introduced into corporate learning and development by designing content that balances educational value with engaging elements tailored to a professional audience.

This can be achieved by incorporating interactive simulations, scenario-based learning, and multimedia presentations that reflect real-world business challenges. Long gone are the days of doing flip chart based exercises just to break up the day.

Using sophisticated graphics, compelling narratives, and relevant case studies ensures that the learning experience is both engaging and credible, fostering a deeper understanding without compromising professionalism.

Additionally, incorporating elements like problem-solving tasks and collaborative activities can enhance engagement and knowledge retention, making learning more dynamic and effective.
